Mrs Carey, Deputy Head of Lower and Middle Schools, delivered a fascinating assembly this week in which she outlined recent developments in the Trinity Malawi project, whereby Trinity is twinned with a primary school in Malawi, Southern Africa, called Chipwepwete.
Over the last five years many Sixth Form students and staff have enjoyed incredible, life-changing experiences with our friends at this school. We have committed to raising funds to help support it with some of the challenges faced in lower income communities.
For every £12 we raise here at school, we are able to support a child at Chipwepwete to have a free school lunch. We have also been able to help resource a library and provide solar lamps, while a suite of three new Trinity classrooms have been opened and resourced with desks and cupboards, and a bridge currently is being built over the local river to help students get to school safely.
Each year, the Headmaster of Chipwepwete, Mr Haj, assesses the needs of the school and asks for our support for particular projects, while at Chipwepwete our students and staff learn about economic development, reforestation and renewable fuels as well as immersing themselves in some of the language – Chichewa. They also have the joy of teaching students, and we get to visit parts of a beautiful country.
Our 2020 Sixth form team worked incredibly hard to fundraise over £18,000 last year and this year the report on this work has been prepared by the Headmaster of Chipwepwete and his staff and students. It can be viewed here.
“I hope you will feel inspired by the video,” says Mrs Carey. “Perhaps some of you will choose Malawi as your year group charity this year, or willingly give to our Christmas appeal.
“Perhaps you will volunteer at some of our events, and every time you buy uniform from our Nearly New sales you are already involved. We hope we will be able to visit again soon, remembering that similar challenges are faced the world over, but also similar dreams survive.”
