Lilian McCann, a member of our art department joined 100s of artists to create a painting, as a contribution to the NHS portrait initiative scheme.
The initiative, a virtual exhibition, showcases portraits of NHS staff, created during the current crisis. The display celebrates frontline workers through portraiture and will raise funds for NHS Charities Together, to help support the ongoing COVID-19 relief effort.
Lily contributed a painting of Paramedic, Sam Strutton. During the recent pandemic, it has been Sam’s job to transfer COVID-19 patients between hospitals. Sam said: “the support the NHS has had from the public has made this task much easier”.
Lilian said: “I was honoured to paint Sam’s portrait, he has the most amazing smile”.
Artist Tom Croft who partnered with the Net Gallery to create this initiative said: “Probably like a lot of people not working on the front line of the pandemic, I felt pretty useless and painting seemed rather irrelevant in the scheme of things. I was struggling to concentrate on my work, so I put a post out on social media offering a free portrait to the first NHS key worker to contact me, and suggested other portrait artists might like to do the same. I asked everyone to post their portraits under the hashtag #portraitsfornhsheroes so everyone can see the results.”
